The First Joint National Codes Conference

31.01.2011

Thursday 27th January 2011
University of Greenwich

This very successful event attracted a full house of 90 delegates with representatives from across the educational sector.

Simon Britton, the Chair of the UUK's Governance body described the event as "going very well and useful in teasing out some of the issues which separate meetings might not have achieved." and Martin Blakey, Chief Executive of Unipol said "the enthusiasm of the delegates for ongoing development and high quality verification and audit was first rate".

The Codes, launched in 2006, had been successful at setting benchmark standards for student accommodation with

  • 235,431 bed spaces in the UUK Code and 155,887 the two ANUK Codes
  • 391,318 bed spaces in all
  • possibly the largest single accreditation system in the United Kingdom
  • £15,652,720,000 - £16 billion of stock

As the UUK Annual Report concluded, there was now "clear evidence from CUBO, AUDE and ASRA that the Codes are now embedded in the management arrangements of Code members and is having a positive impact on the quality of the student experience"

Significant improvements were reported with better use of websites:

  • the Code info website
  • the new ANUK/Unipol website
  • new logos
  • revisions and updating of the Codes on a regular basis
  • and improved training.

Both Annual Reports from the Codes were also clear about future improvements:

  • increasing staff awareness of the content of the Code and staff training
  • undertaking better self assessments prior to audit
  • preparing more fully for an audit
  • reflecting the growing emphasis on the student experience
  • using customer satisfaction surveys as an integral tool within the audit
  • making consumers aware of the Codes, the standards set, the mechanisms used and the complaints processes that are available

offering both students and parents

  • comfort
  • reassurance
  • accountability
  • quality.
