WHAT IS ACCREDITATION

Accreditation is the voluntary compliance by private landlords with good standards in the condition and management of their properties and their relationship with their tenants.

Accreditation acknowledges and encourages good landlords.

Landlords and/or properties can be accredited.

Accredited landlords enjoy a market advantage.

Tenants should rent from accredited landlords as they provide quality accommodation.

Accredited Tenant Schemes acknowledge and encourage tenants to be responsible tenants and neighbours.

Accreditation schemes are run at a local level by local Councils, Higher Educational Institutions and their agents and Landlord Associations.

Landlords who fail to comply with the requirements of their local scheme have their accreditation status removed.

Accreditation is partnership working at a local level to ensure a good supply of privately rented property is readily available.

Accreditation is supported by a wide range of private rented sector stakeholders including the Government, national landlord associations, local authorities, Shelter, the National Union of Students and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

ANUK RECOMMENDED LOCAL AUTHORITY MODEL PRIVATE RENTED SECTOR STRATEGY

ANUK has identified two evolutionary changes in recent times in the relationship between local authorities and the private rented sector (PRS).

Firstly, local authorities are increasingly focusing on their strategic enabling role to work with and support their good landlords to provide the essential private rented housing service that the citizens of local authorities need.

The second change is in the way local authorities carry out their regulatory duties for the health, safety and welfare of private tenants.
